The first version of the clinical practice guideline pain was written in 1996 as part of the palliative care clinical practice guidelines of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Middle Netherlands. In 2005 the clinical practice guideline was rewritten by A. de Graeff, E.H. Verhagen, T.C. Besse, B.J.P. Crul and R.J.A. Krol and included in the first edition of the clinical practice guidelines book of the Association of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (VIKC).

During the revision of the clinical practice guideline, recommendations from the CBO/VIKC guideline ‘Diagnosis and treatment of pain in cancer patients' (published in February 2008) were incorporated.
